Description
THE NEW COLOSSUS is my setting of Emma Lazarus’ sonnet (written in 1883 to raise funds for the pedestal of the – at that time – brand-new Statue of Liberty). The sonnet is inscribed on a plaque now located on the Statue’s pedestal, and has become known worldwide by its depiction of the Statue as the “Mother of Exiles” – a symbol of immigration and opportunity associated with the Statue and, by extension, with the United States itself.
